Governors of India

Just as the President is the head of the republic, the Governor is the head of the State. The Governor is nominally the head of a state. However, the Chief Minister serves as the executive head. All executive actions taken by the State are done in the Governor’s name. He merely consents to various executive actions. They do not have the power to make any major decisions. The Council of Ministers and the Chief Minister have true power in the executive actions of a state.

How is governor elected?

The Auditor-General and Comptroller of India report on the accounts of a State shall reach the Governor of the State. He shall then cause them to be presented to the legislature.

Power and authority of governor

The Governor must approve all bills that are passed by the Legislative Assembly to become law. The Governor can send the bill back to the Vidhan Saha for review if it is not a money-related bill. The Governor must sign the bill if the Vidhan Saha has sent it back to him the second time.

Term of office and retirement age

The Governor is authorized to promulgate ordinances when the Legislative Assembly does not meet. An ordinance must also be implemented immediately. The law is effective for six weeks after it is approved by the legislature.

The term of the Governor’s position is usually five years. However, it can be ended sooner by the Dismissal of the President (usually on advice from the prime minister of the country), at which pleasure the Governor holds office.

Salary of governor

Currently, the President receives Rs 1.50 Lakh per month, Vice-President Rs 1.25 Lakh, and Governors of states Rs 1.10 Lakh in salary. The President of India nominates the Governor for a five-year term, and they remain in office at the President’s discretion.

Facilities availed by governor

The Governor is a part of the State Legislature and has the same rights as the President with respect to Parliament. Although these powers are formal, the Governor must still be guided by the Chief Minister or his Council of Ministers before making such decisions. The Governor will present the State Legislature with the annual financial statements and make requests for grants.

Roles and responsibilities of governor

Like the central in India, the State has a little bit of a governance structure. The Governor is the head and vested with the executive power of the State. A governor can be any citizen of India for over 35 years.

The President may make any provision that he considers appropriate to enable the Governor of a State to perform his functions in any situation not provided for by Part VI Chapter 2 of the Constitution of India.
